SPECIAL CONVENTION COVERAGE -- What's Obama Afraid Of?While the "Best Convention Speech" award goes to Senator Barack Obama, there was plenty of grumbling among the press corps about the Senator's failure to put himself in the shark tank with reporters while he was at the convention. As noted here, every other candidate was open and available for a grilling by the press. Not Obama. His handlers kept him at bay. The protectionism of Obama seems to being done for one reason: his handlers don't want him to slip up, be forced to talk detail, or take away what he says in his impressive stump speech. That may be good enough for now. But the press corps isn't going to go along for this ride for much longer -- and neither will voters. Not too sure what voters Steven here is referring to? I think Obama's failure to take questions will pester the media. You've slowly started to see the press starting to ask the tough questions and the "no-specifics" stories in the media will become more common if he continues to blow off the press. They have egos too, and managing press is about more than having twenty million cameras behind you. That's something that Steve certainly understands. In complete contrast is Senator Chris Dodd, who met with bloggers on Saturday, including some from this very site, to talk about the issues for forty minutes. He is incredibly bright and has great stands on the issues. It's a shame the media ignores him. I just posted the entire video here. Thanks for the video Brian. We were very impressed with Dodd's performance at the blogger circle. In a fairer world, he would be considered top tier, as he's certainly one of the smartest and most experienced people to have ever run for the office. I just don't see him winning this thing, but he would make a great Cabinet Secretary. http://camajorityreport.com/index.php?module=articles&func=display&aid=1770&ptid=9 He would make a great Secretary, as long as we are sure that Jodi Rell wouldn't appoint herself to the Senate. Actually, as a member of the press, I can tell you that the press didn't really care that Obama didn't do a press conference. Clinton delivered boilerplate, including her replies to overawed Democratic bloggers. And the other candidates aren't enough in contention, though Richardson scored by taking every question till his staff finally dragged him away to get to the airport for his Darfur rally in SF. Of course he has to deliver more policy stuff and do more with the press. But it's real early. I think he's a very smart guy and suspect he has a good sequence in mind. Incidentally, let me point a couple of things out here. Steve is a great guy who does a great job, although his spin sometimes seriously annoys me. He is pushing for Hillary. Keep the dots connected. Fabian, as I revealed last week, is for Hillary. Steve works for Fabian. So get out your salt shaker. That said, I think Hillary is a terrific candidate. I think Obama is a terrific candidate. I think Edwards is a terrific candidate. I think Richardson is a terrific candidate. I think the others all have great merits. Every campaign has its own sequence of events. It's actually not all that hard to come before a bunch of reporters and take a half-dozen questions. Especially when those reporters are unlikely to do follow-ups. So the question for the campaign is, what visuals do you want? Hillary knew that her convention address response would be fine but not fantastic. Therefore, it made sense to do a press conference. The news hook of which was a bunch of legislative endorsements. She did not do press conferences in Carson City -- the first Democratic forum of the race, and she was the only candidate who stiffed the press -- or Las Vegas, the second forum of the race. In Carson City, she was avoiding the David Geffen controversy, and her own tepid forum performance. In Las Vegas, she was content to have her fine forum performance dominate. The candidates don't do what they do because they are lovely people or not so lovely people, they do it because it makes sense for their situations. Ratings |

SPECIAL CONVENTION COVERAGE -- What's Obama Afraid Of?
Posted by: Cheechfiji on April 29, 2007O brother. Why would the 800 pound gorilla, who is already getting all the press attention he could want, subject himself to the shark tank? The only reason a candidate would participate in the shark tank in the first place is to, well, garner press. With over 40 cameras trained on his AMAZING convention speech, and reporters following him everywhere he goes, there is simply no logical reason for Obama to partake in the shark tank. And no, I disagree that this will hurt him. Look back at the 2000 GOP contest. Everyone wanted to interview and question “W,” but he merely blew them off. As the 800 pound gorilla in that race, the press was already groveling at this feet, so he had no incentive to make himself available. Do I need to remind you who won in 2000?
