Oil Companies Behind Prop 23 Paying for "Independent" Research
When it comes to Prop 23, you just need to follow the money to see just how deceptive the Texas oil companies bankrolling the measure are. In financial reports filed today, the oil companies behind Proposition 23 finally revealed they are paying tens of thousands of dollars to researchers to develop reports that say California's clean air and standards are job killers. Tom Tanton, who has produced several reports attacking AB 32 and bills himself as an independent "economist," received $35,000 in payment. Tanton's widely criticized work is the basis of the Yes on 23's "study" that says AB 32 will hurt local communities. Gee, I wonder if the $35,000 he received helped him reach that conclusion in his "independent" work. The Yes on 23 campaign also paid Pacific Research Institute $40,000. Just yesterday the group, which also is funded by the Tea Party-backing Koch Brothers, put out a report attacking AB 32 http://climateprogress.org/2010/10/05/koch-funded-prop-23-study-draws-oily-conclusions/. The oil companies also are paying off a California Firefighters Association lobbyist. Guess it's no surprised why they signed the Yes ballot argument now, either.
