SPECIAL CONVENTION COVERAGE -- There's a Riot Goin' On with Barack Obama

April 28, 2007 @ 2:55 PM
Clinton exceeded expectations by attracting a strong outpouring of delgate support. Obama's love was a virtual flood. His army of floor volunteers outnumbered Clinton's the way the Persians outnumbered the 300, the way Woodstock outnumbers a local poetry slam. Our intrepid camera-toting team was given an exclusive heads-up about Obama's entry point on the floor, was perfectly positioned and alone in greeting him, then was immediately stempeded by Obama-worshipping delegates.

Since the conventional wisdom going in was that she would get treated with either snarky indifference or downright antipathy (a.k.a. "the Kerry treatment") from the preponderance of party hardliners, the fact that the floor response was largely enthusiastic and the catcalls from Hillary-haters were relatively muted means, yeah, she exceeded expectations. I'm not saying the "anyone but HRC" crowd doesn't exist or won't have their day. But, today, they were effectively floor-managed into irrelevance.

The lefties are as bad as the righties. Let's not let the party be hijacked by ideologues who would miss the forest for the trees. I'll take an electable realist anyday. Sorry Hillary isn't nut job enough for the extremists. The idea is to win a presidency not to make a point.
