Why's Obama Passing Up California's Global Warming Debate?
Hillary Clinton will be there. John Edwards will be there. Even Dennis Kucinich will be there. But Sen. Barack Obama appears to be MIA this weekend for an historic debate on global warming in Los Angeles sponsored by the California League of Conservation Voters. The first Presidential Forum on Global Warming and America's Energy Future "will be a critical opportunity to hear from the candidates on their positions and to further elevate our issues in the presidential election," according to the CLCV's Susan Smart. More than a thousand people will fill the theater to watch the event. (You can watch the live webcast here.) The event, which is sponsored by Grist and Living on Earth, will start at 2:15 pm PST with a welcome address from Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Each of the candidates will then get 30 minutes on stage to talk about their vision for solving our energy problems and answer questions on their policies.
Here's the schedule: It's unfortunate that Sen. Obama won't be attending. Global warming is near the top of every Democrats list of issue concerns. It's too bad the Illinois senator seems to be giving the issue -- and California -- short shrift. Steve, To suggest that because Senator Obama is not appearing at a forum means he doesnt care about this issue is silly. As you should be aware Senator Obama has issued a strong plan, well befor Senator Clinton did, about how to combat global warming. Moreover he has spoken repeatedly about this plan to audiences that arent always so friendly, as he did when he went to Detroit and spoke to automakers there. I do want to take you to task though for singling out Senator Obama, when Senators Biden and Dodd as well as Governor Richardson are not attending as well. I also believe you need to alert your readers that your boss, Fabian Nunez, is a co-chair of the Hillary Clinton campaign and also just recently singled out Senator Obama for not appearing. The California Majority report should not become part of the Hillary Clinton campaign unless you disclose that that is what it is becoming. Which I hope will not be the case. Best, mitchell Schwartz State Director for California, Barack Obama for President I've written good things here about the Senator (including your being named to head the campaign) and avoided other opportunities (like the inadequacy of his health care plan), but if he's a no-show on one of the the single most important issues to California he ought to be called out for it, as I've done and my boss has done. The Speaker not only is a co-chair of the Hillary Clinton campaign, but also the author of the nation's premiere global emissions reduction law, and has some standing on that aside from his endorsement of Sen. Clinton. I'm not as concerned about Biden, Dodd, and Richardson not being there, as they have no active campaigns in California the way Hillary, Edwards, and Obama do. Claiming that someone is a "no-show on one of the single most important issues to California" because he doesn't attend one meeting is the kind of dishonest rhetoric we usually associate with Karl Rove. What matters is the candidate's total record on an issue, not one moment or one meeting. You'd think Fabian Nunez, of all people, would be the first to appreciate that. For the record, every candidate, Democratic and Republican, was invited to the forum. Jeez, Steve, if you'd only put this much energy into attacking Republicans instead of 'eating your own'... Why's Obama Passing Up California's Global Warming Debate?
Posted by: realliberaldem on November 16, 2007So because he rather focus his efforts on creating more support for the fight against global warming among those that don’t currently support those efforts, versus Preaching To The Choir, which is what this forum amounts to (I doubt Rush Limbaugh or the rest of the "global warming is a farce" crowd will be in the audience), that some how makes him pro global warming? Ever consider that maybe, just maybe, he prioritizes tangible results over grand standing and preaching to the converted?
